WHY CHOOSE THIS TOUR?
Tinajani Canyon
Located at 3,953 meters above sea level in the highlands of Puno, the Tinajani Canyon is a natural setting that seems straight out of another planet. This mystical landscape was once part of the territory of the ancient Qaluyo culture, which settled along the banks of the Pacobamba River. Its towering red granite formations, reaching up to 50 meters high, were sculpted over centuries by wind erosion, volcanic activity, and underground water infiltration. These formations, resembling human and animal shapes, bring life to a landscape that seems to possess its own consciousness. Among its many legends, the tale of the “Devil’s Bath” stands out, adding an aura of mystery to this geological wonder.
Pucará: Cradle of Altiplano Art and History
Pucará is much more than an Andean village it is a symbol of cultural identity in the highlands. Known for its colorful “Toritos de Pucará,” icons of protection and prosperity placed on rooftops across Peru, this place also houses one of the region’s most fascinating archaeological sites. The ancient Pukara civilization, considered the mother culture of the altiplano, left its mark in the monumental Kalasaya temple and in an urban-ceremonial complex that reveals their advanced social organization. The local museum preserves stelae, ceramics, and stunning carvings, including the remarkable “Pukara Stela” or “Suche,” a key piece for understanding pre-Inca art and worldview.
Lampa: The Pink City of the Highlands
Lampa, nicknamed “the pink city” due to the earthy hue of its colonial adobe houses, is a charming town where history breathes through cobbled streets. Its architectural jewel, the Church of Santiago Apóstol, dazzles with its intricately worked silver altar, valuable colonial paintings, and a system of catacombs that holds the secrets of the past. Lampa is a must-visit for art, spirituality, and history lovers seeking to connect with the essence of deep Peru.
PRIVATE TOUR TINAJANI - LAMPA AND PUCARÁ 1 DAY
Embark on a fascinating journey along the Quechua Route, where nature, history, and ancestral legends intertwine to offer a truly unique and unforgettable experience. From the colonial remnants of Lampa, through the ancient wisdom of Pucará, to the enigmatic Tinajani Canyon, this route is a true voyage through time and the soul of the Peruvian highlands.
First Stop: Lampa, the Pink City of the Andes
Our local guide will meet you at your hotel with a private vehicle to begin this magical day. Our first destination is Lampa, a colonial gem frozen in time. Its cobbled streets and red clay mansions transport us to another era, while the imposing Church of Santiago Apóstol houses surprising treasures: an ossuary of ancient settlers and an exact replica of Michelangelo’s La Pietà, the only one in Latin America. Here, you’ll feel how spirituality and history merge in every corner.
Next: Pucará, Living Culture Among Mountains
As we ascend through the highland landscapes, the road offers spectacular views of the Puya Raimondii, ancient plants that defy time and reach up to 10 meters high. Considered living fossils, they are a symbol of Andean resilience.
Upon arrival in Pucará, birthplace of one of the oldest civilizations in the altiplano, we’ll explore the Kalasaya Archaeological Complex, where the sacred duality of the Pukara people earth and sky, masculine and feminine, life and death—is revealed. Next, we’ll visit the Lithic Museum, which houses stelae, sculptures, and tools that narrate the story of this civilization that predated the Incas.
After the tour, you’ll have free time to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (at your own expense), where highland flavors will enrich your cultural experience. We’ll then visit an artisanal workshop, where master potters bring the famous Toritos de Pucará to life symbols of protection, fertility, and strength using ancestral techniques you’ll see firsthand.
Grand Finale: Tinajani Canyon, a Natural Sanctuary of Stone and Wind
In the afternoon, we’ll head to Tinajani Canyon, a geological wonder where nature has sculpted a forest of red granite rocks over millennia. Here, you’ll walk among formations that resemble human figures, animals, and mythological beings shaped by wind, water, and ancient fire.
Our guide will lead you through hidden trails and secret viewpoints where you can capture the best photographs and hear local legends, including the eerie tale of the “Devil’s Bath.” The mystical silence of the canyon, broken only by the Andean wind, turns this moment into a ritual of deep connection with Pachamama (Mother Earth).
